Effective Resident Involvement in Sheltered Housing
23 March 2010 - 29 April 2010(Presented in association with Hasler Training Associates) Do you really listen? Changes in sheltered housing have brought to the fore the lack of meaningful consultation around many issues. Residents often feel that key decisions have already been made without them, leaving them cynical about future consultation exercises, and leading them to lose trust in their provider.
Organiser: Centre for Housing and Support, Elgar House, Shrub Hill Road, Worcester WR4 9EE
Location: Manchester, Worcester and London
The report Nobody’s Listening recommended the establishment of good practice guidance for both commissioners and providers concerning resident involvement and engagement. The Effective Resident Involvement and Consultation in Sheltered Housing guide, co-written by Jill Hasler (Hasler Training Associates), endorsed by the Audit Commission, Help the Aged, Age Concern, CIH, the DWP, the Elderly Accommodation Council, ERoSH, the Housing LIN and the National Housing Federation, has been designed to meet the recommendation.
This series of seminars, delivered by Jill Hasler herself, aims to promote good practice in involvement and consultation throughout sheltered housing; which means going beyond legal requirements and challenging individuals and organisations about how they communicate with and respond to older residents.
The primary aim is to facilitate Sheltered Housing staff to develop effective resident involvement and consultation and develop their own practice. Participants will be encouraged to develop ideas for an approach that could be applied in their own organisation and review their current approach.
The Programme will include:
- An introduction to the guide, highlighting the importance of effective communication along with a strategic approach
- Why do it? Regulators requirements, changing expectations, business case and legal requirement
- Involving and engaging older people; how it is different
- Participants own experience – what is good about what is happening now?
- What are your own / your organisations barriers to effective involvement and engagement?
- The importance of terminology – say what you mean and mean what you say
- Theory into practice – group work on case studies
- Conclusions and action planning
