Financial Inclusion for Older People

22 April 2010 - 20 May 2010

Financial exclusion is a serious national problem. People can lose their independence, see their living conditions deteriorate, descend into poverty and even lose their homes.

Organiser: Centre for Housing and Support, Elgar House, Shrub Hill Road, Worcester WR4 9EE
Location: Worcester

According to NHF statistics around 70% of financially excluded people live in social housing. Housing-related Support providers have a vital role to play in helping tackle this issue and promote the Financial Inclusion of older people.

A government initiative linked to public service agreements tasks housing providers with developing their own Financial Inclusion strategy. Service providers need policies and procedures to take account of financial issues facing older people today and a programme of training to ensure staff are adequately skilled to help service users claim benefit entitlements, concessionary and free services, both locally, regionally and nationally.

This seminar considers how financial inclusion issues impact on the design and delivery of supported housing services for older people. It looks also at how organisations can improve the financial inclusion of its older people strategically and through the role of the frontline supported/sheltered housing manager

At the end of the day you will be able to:

  • Define financial inclusion/exclusion and identify the related policy and research background
  • Explain the causes of financial exclusion, how it particularly affects older people and why it is important to address
  • Consider what organisations can do to improve the financial inclusion of their older people including working with other agencies
  • Examine the role of the frontline supported/sheltered housing worker in improving the financial inclusion of older people including identifying instances of financial exclusion
