Telecare Services Association

An older couple

Mr and Mrs X are a couple in their late 70s, Mr X is in poor health and Mrs X has dementia. Mr X was particularly concerned about his wife at night when she would often get out of bed on her own – at such times she was at risk of injury or falls.

Before TSA member, Gateshead Care Call, was asked to help, Mr X was using a home made alarm system which consisted of nuts and bolts in a metal box tied with a piece of string to his wife’s bedroom door. If his wife opened the bedroom door the clattering noise would wake him up so that he could help his wife and put her back to bed. Although this home made system certainly worked, over a period of time a lack of sleep and growing anxiety levels meant that Mr X’s health and wellbeing was affected.

When Gateshead Care Call were asked to help they were able to recommend a telecare system which would make an immediate difference to their lives. After surveying the property, Care Call installed a wandering client device to Mrs. X’s bedroom door. This provided Mr X with the reassurance he needed to sleep soundly knowing that if his wife opened the bedroom door an alarm located in his bedroom would sound and wake him up.

A little while later a pager system was installed alongside the wandering client device. If Mr. X was downstairs or in the garden while his wife was in bed he had the certainty of knowing that the pager would alert him immediately if his wife opened the bedroom door.
